MORE Love Tempo Pics!

Benny Troy - I Wanna Give You Tomorrow

I first heard this on a DJ Muro tape and I've been hooked ever since. Big on the UK soul scene, this Disco tune is a bomb anywhere it gets played. Sing a long!

Ramsey and Company - Love Call

Good luck grabbing an original copy, this is one rare as hen's teeth and expensive little tune! Recorded by a band in Catskills, New York, which was basically a fancy vacationing spot in the country side back in the day for rich Manhattanites, where bands could regularly get work playing for the crowds, this one was never sold or distributed through traditional channels. I'll just have to be happy with my re-issue of this one.

Here is the official press release from Lotus Land which is an entertaining read:

NEW YORK, 1979 – RAMSEY & CO. was the group Mainor Ramsey had pieced together to play the Catskills supper club circuit. Their only release being the super charged sexy disco hit “Love Call” backed with super blaxploitation fodder “Leg Grease”, release on Mainor’s own label, Ramco. This limited styrene 7” single was sold exclusively at the groups live shows and never saw it’s way into proper distribution. 500 press? Oddly this limited release eventually found it’s way onto the dancefloors of the UK’s northern soul/modern soul scene, and became a super smash ripping up floors whenever played. The sheer quality of this tune mixed with the utter rarity has made this record nearly impossible to find and quite valuable on the collector’s market. We did some serious homework and located Mainor in NYC. We were stunned to learn that despite this tune’s mega reputation (not to mention world famous DJ Harvey re-edit on BBE) that Mainor had no idea about his tune’s “afterlife”. We proudly present to you the very first vinyl release of this deep disco classic.

Rev. Carl Bean - I Was Born This Way

Special Post for Pride Weekend - shout out to all of my friends in the struggle: I came across this fantastic post of Carl Bean talking about God and unconditional love, embracing one another and being honest about who you really are.

and of course, both the vocal and instrumental of this classic:

Skye - Aint No Need (Original Unedited Version)

Thank you Jimmy Briggs for penning such wonderful lyrics, and thank you Gordon Dowitty and Paul Harvey for producing these few minutes of musical bliss. Thank you Kevin Beamish for the mix down, who btw also worked on Miracles "Love Machine", Lenny Williams "Choosing You" as well as works by Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5, The Originals, The Might Clouds of Joy and many more.

Outside of those names on the label, Skye has always been a bit of a mystery to me, which for the record, should not be confused with Randy Muller's popular group Skyy. This Skye is a pretty much unknown group from the West Coast, who are basically a mystery to most of us.

By default, most of you only get to hear the edited 12" "Dance" version, which is basically a loop of the last moments of this original version of the tune, which has been bootlegged and edited many times over the years. As great as that mix is, there is an amazing song that many never get the chance to hear. Well here is this beautiful song in it's original form for you all to enjoy. This is some seriously heavy stuff, so be sure to really listen to those lyrics. I'm sure we can all think of a time in our life where these lyrics have some real world application. I know I can.

The Quality Mending Company

I'm often contacted by fellow DJs and music lovers that are visiting New York, asking me where all the best record shops are, in addition to clothing shops and restaurants. While this is primarily a music site, from time to time I am going to feature what I think are quality shops to visit during your stay in NYC. This first post is in perfect tune with Secret Rendezvous, as this shop is quietly tucked away in the basement of a beautiful cobble stone street in the downtown area.

Oliver owns this vintage shop, "The Quality Mending Company" (31 Crosby Street), as well as "Eleven" (on the corner of Prince Street & Elizabeth), and is the clothing equivelent of obsessive record diggers, unearthing gems in lost warehouses, estate sales and lord knows where else he digs for vintage clothing. I walked down there today and he was showing me a hand crafted vest from France that predates the 1800s. I was also shown vintage sport equipment, children's shoe lasts and other unique items from the past like a handmade catchers mask made out of an old Vietnamese war helmet. Beyond the eccentric items that initially catch your eye, he actually stocks clothing we can wear everyday. Expect dead stock work wear, vintage sneakers, boots and tees, that are far from run of the mill. I see fantastic clothing I never see in other vintage shops.

Last but not least, Oliver sells his own line of canvas bags. Duffles of different sizes, shoulder bags, and even a super cool bag based on a bowling bag style. The duffles are great for traveling, or just looking good. He measured them so they fit on any airline, so travel is not out of the question with these.

Say hi to Oliver when you are in town, and in the meantime you can check out his blog:
