Tyrone Evans "Rise Up" Discomix b/w Greenwood Rhythm Coalition - "Rise Up" 10" mix special

Rise Up From the Ground Up. Last Fall, Monk-One and myself shuttled up to the White Plains section of the Bronx on a mission to talk with Mr. Bullwackie himself, Lloyd Barnes. We were negotiating a painless deal that would allow Names You Can Trust the chance to re-release the Tyrone Evans funky-cosmic-masterpiece, Rise Up, on a sexy slab of 10" wax. It appeared on a limited press Wackies LP in 1983, which has been just scarce enough over the years to elude collectors and in dire need of a proper rebirth. The plan was to slightly reshape the original cut as an extended discomix, as well as undertake a full re-working of the tune with the Greenwood Rhythm Coalition crew. The latter became a process that incorporated 3 Brooklyn studios and a bevy of session musicians. Built upon the foundation of the tune's lunar bass line, we recorded ace bass player Andy Cotton on a tough syncopated groove in the confines of New Dutch Studio. We skipped through the planetary Kings to Red Hook, there long enough to tape an arsenal of horns at Studio Brooklyn, where the original tune's vocal chants were transformed into a neat brass-stack of Baritone, Trumpet and Valve Trombone courtesy of Ezra Brown & Jonathan Powell respectively. From there, the GRC re-working became enveloped in it's own intergalactic spark, eschewing the straight laced beat for a rugged broken number that was built upon dirty organs of a West African pedigree, Island-era guitar licks, and a Guyanese-Rum soaked session of manic-magnificent-cowbells played by Gianni Mano of Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra. The rest, as they sometimes say, just happened. Fuck it, just listen... or buy it May 28th from nyctrust.com -E's E
