2011 was a great year! It kicked off with a couple of great gigs in Moscow with Javybz aka Julia Rodionova & Anna Karmanova, followed by other great parties this year like the smash night at "Love Thy Brother" in Oslo with the homey Kent, playing secret 7"s with Hans and Fredfades at an outdoor Oslo backyard gig, Los Angeles with the Ron Herman crew, the Washington DC Disco throw-down with Deep Sang, Love Fixation with the special guest homey Red Greg & Doug Gomez, thanks to Jacques Renault & Nik Mercer for a packed night with DFA's Tiago and myself at "Let's Play House" at Le Bain, The dope Soho Grand Hotel Club Room night with Mike behind the P&P re-issues, Foreal People, Tropical Heatwave with Mcboingboing, Cinco De Mayo with Monk One & E's E and One-man, Soup with Aaron Dae & Chris Love, jamming with Vincent Oshin and Osore at Submercer, a posh evening at the SOHO House, jamming out in BK with Sharegroove's Steve Shakewell & Patrick Billard, a wonderful birthday party at El Ay Si with DJs Xerxes, McBoingboing, Ben Manzone, Nydia, Pablo and Old Chris throwing down the ridiculously hot tunes for me, The Von posse aka Charles, Kareem and especially the best man behind the bar Drew Conrad, shouts to Jared & the Lost & Found posse for letting me get busy at Savales, and particularly the final night of Lost & Found with Jared, Pablo, Navarro One-Man, and a ton of other great DJs in NYC (thanks for squeezing me in), and I'm sure there are probably lots more parties I forgot about, but those are def some of the year's highlights!

Has it already been a couple of years since I posted this gem? This one had blown my mind, and a lot of other minds around the globe from collectors to people who just want to hear beautiful music. I just saw some of my homegirls (Javybz) in Moscow reposting, and it reminded me of what a great mix this is. This one deserves a proper Secret Rendezvous repost for sure. Here is the original post:

Jared Boxx a.k.a. JBX of the world-famous ‘Big City Records’ record store here in the Big Apple just blessed Secret Rendezvous with the "Thanks for Waiting" mixtape. Jared has been one of the east coast’s most consistent record dealers over the past 10 years, honing his trade in New York’s well known ‘Sound Library’ before moving on to open his own boutique store in Alphabet City, Big City records. Jared also lit up dancefloors as one of the main DJs spinning rare tunes at Bumpshop, NYC's favorite rare funk and soul 7" party, and continues to drop vinyl heat Tuesdays at Savales in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

"Thanks for Waiting" is a magnificent mix of independent records, ranging from mid-tempo steppers, to slow tunes and dancers. All the records on this mix are bound together by their independent spirit, and ambition to produce lush recordings dripping with soul, while on a budget of course. This one is really special, I didn't know a lot of the tunes on here, and the ones I do recognize are only a painful reminder of how bad I need them in my collection. So sit back and soak up the tunes forgotten through time and limited resources, finally brought to our ears by JBX...

I've been lucky enough to get to know Darren over time, and have him play several parties for me in NYC. Knowing how great both his attitude, party rocking DJ skills and musical selection are, I couldn't be happier to see him release a proper compilation for Joey Negro's Z Records Label. It's about time he got the recognition he deserves, and it's nice to see him get some shine, while he blesses us with a hell of a comp, full of brilliant tunes. I was lucky enough to get a few of his edits from him, and I can tell you that you will not be disappointed one bit. Now ZR launches a new compilation series named Under The Influence. The story behind UTI is this, being a seasoned record collector Z label boss Dave Lee (Joey Negro) has made the acquaintance of many of the worlds other vinyl junkies. People that may be unknown to the general public but are hardcore enthusiasts who have built some of the best collections of soul, funk and disco on the planet. The idea of UTI isn't about big name djs but is to give a musical platform to those who have the knowledge to put together a track listing of killer tunes. Volume 1 has been compiled by DJ Red Greg aka Darren Griffiths, a familiar face across the world at record fairs and second hand vinyl stores...as well as a dj putting on his own Ebonite nights in Dalston (and playing in parties in the UK as well as Paris and NYC) .

For the record, we at Z aren't interested in re-issuing collectors obscurities, average records that are best left as rare vinyl only pieces, we only want re-vitalise great music that has stood the test of time. When Darren sent us in the CDs of his proposed track listing we were blown away by the high standard of his selection. Unlike many re-issue comps we doubt there will be anyone who picks up this CD and looks through the track list and has the all the songs contained. This selection is the result of years of digging, buying records on a hunch, acquiring a few turkeys to find the gems. Check his sleeve notes out for some detailed analysis and history.

First off I want to thank Kent Horne for putting together this trip for me, and allowing me to be a special guest DJ at his "Love Thy Brother" party in Oslo, Norway. I had a great time spinning records at the various parties I was booked at, as well as back at the apartment, so the music literally never stopped flowing. It was also a blast to make new friends, and hang out with some of the other cats like Hans, Erik, Fred, Morten and more. I also want to thank Ron aka Ron Like Hell for putting me in touch with Kent, and ultimately making this trip possible. Enjoy some of the pics I snapped...

Thanks for the homey Jared at Big City for pointing this one out to me. He already put in a pre-order for the shop, so if you are in the NYC area, you need to see the man about getting a copy of this. This tune is a rare killer from Tulsa, OK, and apparently the re-issue's Release date is August 15th, issued with Deluxe 7" sleeve, Promo card & digital download coupon. Sounds good to me since I don't have a spare $1,000 to spend on one original copy of this record! I'm down with a proper re-issue like that, especially when it is put together properly, good quality and all because lord knows we can't have all of the rarest OGs, all of the time.

The elusive Superfunkanova MIX by Sean P of Better Days Records fame!

Before you have the luxury of downloading this incredibly funky mix by none other than Sean P, AKA "The Knowledge", I want you to know the lengths I went through to get this mix.

A few years ago while scouring the interwebz, I somehow came across a limited download from the man himself. I was already a fan of Sean P's edits, and I had a couple of other mixes by him I would listen to. There was the 6 Million Steps mix, the DJ History mix, and the Red Bull academy mix, all killer, no filler. This new mix was really special, and I felt like it was my favorite of the bunch. I was listening to it on the regular, as I usually do when I obsess over a great mix or tune.

Everything was going peachy, until something went horribly wrong one day, as this latest limited mix was gone from my computer. Did I accidentally delete it? Maybe. I spent hours upon hours of turning my hard drives both internal and external inside out, trying to find it. I searched every possible term, and eventually went into the back end and literally clicked on every audio file to hear it, and make sure it wasn't named incorrectly. Keep in mind, I have thousands, upon thousands of audio files. I did this twice. I am not kidding. It was days of searching. I hit up every message board forum, and nobody knew what mix I was talking about. I tried messaging Sean P himself on any forum he may have been a member, but he doesn't strike me as someone that spends much time on the interwebz. The last time he logged into DJ History (yes I checked) was like 1997 or something, so this shit was getting hopeless. I've made announcements on facebook, and reached out to anyone possible, to no avail.

A few days ago one of our favorite DJs Red Greg hit me up and asked me if I was still looking for this mix. He said he was chatting to Sean P, and would see if he could get it for me. I told him all the records I could remember from the mix, in hopes of getting the right one. Well, two days ago Red Greg came through with the mix, and said Sean P wouldn't mind if he shared it. I clicked and downloaded to be sure, and BAM, there it was, the first bars of VIP Connection came through my speakers. What a glorious moment this was! Well this mix is just so bad ass, just as hot as I remember it, and now it is time I shared it with you, the people who though I was crazy going after a mix that didn't exist.

It's been way too long since I've updated this blog! I promised myself I wouldn't post until I uploaded photographs from my Oslo experience, but while I still haven't gotten around to that, a lot of other good things have been happening and they deserve some Secret Rendezvous love.

We recently had a great Foreal People radio show on our favorite program "Let's Get Serious" on WNYU fm. You can catch the whole show HERE, and you can also download my set HERE!

Washington DC Disco Invasion with Love On The Run & Deep Sang Report!

This past weekend I was asked to DJ at Marvin, a soul oriented club named after Marvin Gaye, in Washington DC. I've been to DC before, so you won't see many photos of our monuments on this trip. Instead, it was a great weekend filled with soul music parties, record shops and friends old and new.

Marvin is the venue I DJ'd at, and there are two floors, divided between the restaurant downstairs, and the club upstairs. Upstairs, the club has an outdoor and indoor area decorated with vintage photos of recording artists. It was a beautiful night, and both the outdoors and indoors were PACKED with dancers that were up for our mix of classic and obscure Soul and Disco records we played, so we couldn't ask for anything more. We partied like it was 1999.

I met Marshall (on the left) that night, and he opened up with smoking Soul-Jazz cuts, setting up the room perfectly for Deep Sang (on the right) and I. I got on early with some midtempo soul cuts, before Jacob got back on and upped the tempo for the heads that were ready to dance. I got on again and started lighting that fire under their asses with some heavy Disco, and the rest of the night was Deep Sang and I trading back and forth. It was a great night full of heavy soulful Disco gems. We had a blast. Thanks jacob, let's do it again soon bro...

I threw this up at the end of a mixtape a couple of years ago, and was surprised at how many people were asking me for information on this one. Classic rare groove cut!

Damn, the dudes have come a long way! If you don't live in the area, Madison Square Garden is the biggest performance venue in New York City. To put this in perspective, the legendary Rock & Roll icon ELVIS was scared shitless to play their almost his entire career. He finally showed up when he grew some bigger balls, and did his thing. You can only imagine how pumped up I am that these guys who made classics for the likes of places like The Paradise Garage, The Roxy, all Bronx B-Boy jams, and downtown spots like the Mudd Club are actually getting a shot at the big time playing alongside current hipster favorite LCD Soundsystem at the Garden.

I've seen Liquid Liquid live before at a reunion show at The Knitting Factory a couple of years ago, and they are even better live. According to Sal P, they are much tighter now then they were then, and I believe it just by watching the above video in Japan!

Thankfully my dude Max waited on line at 3am to purchase these impossible to get tickets for this particular show, and I promise I will try to snap some pics and shoot some video for this site!

Cassette Love 015: DJ Dirty Hands from Washington DC

I first met the homey Dirty Hands through mutual buddies Ant Rich and Kenny during his visit to NYC. Our boys were booking us for various parties around town, and we instantly struck up a friendly connection. He is a cool dude, and we share common ground with a love for our music, great food and seriously fancy threads! We get along real well as friends, but he also came to garnish serious respect from me when I finally witnessed Dirty Hands do his thing at a Vibe music awards after party. Dirty smashed it! He is the man when it comes to spinning Hip-Hop both new jams and old, mixed up with party classics on the scene in general, and he had the crowd on lock. The peak moment of the night was watching the entire crowd chanting "Play that funky music white boy" at Dirty Hands while he was slamming the decks. That's a pretty funny story on the surface, but if you take a moment to really think about it, that is no small feat at a Vibe Music Awards Show after party, trust me on this one.

Besides being D.C.'s top DJ he also founded Club Fly, and has DJ'd along side the biggest names in the business. So I was pretty happy to see that Dirty Hands held onto some of his roots, and sent over a couple of mix tapes he saved from back in the day that no doubt helped him get his start. If you look close enough at one of them, you can see the track listing.

Cassette Love 014: Johnny from Good Records NYC!

Johnny runs one of the illest record shops in the NYC area, and beyond! Always a trooper, Johhny has been DJ'ing, spitting rhymes, collecting records and flipping them to the benefit of the community for years. From S.F. to NYC he holds it down. He had me as a guest DJ on his old EVR radio show back in the day (when it was still run out of the dude's apartment) and we meditated to oddball post punk records I brought with me, until a speaker came crashing down off the shelf onto the turntable and smashed one of my records. The energy in that room was so great, that the universe couldn't take it anymore, obviously, and something had to happen. Well Johnny is still smashing eardrums and fucking with the balance of the universe with his current radio show he runs out of his awesome shop. The same awesome shop that I've got some of the illest records in my collection from, like Vance & Suzanne for instance, and the same shop where I've drooled over other records, like the Minority Band LP, the Le Cop 12" and more. Cassette Love 013: Nick Pepe AKA DJ Freqnik!

Don't fret, the cheesy shout outs were totally a joke for Nick pepe. The man, the myth, the legend. Some of you may know Nick Pepe, but some of you may not. Nick was always a great DJ from the LI area. I heard him for the first time in 1993 in some Long Island club playing soul/breaks/hip-hop etc. He was and still is always super smooth on the decks. I didn't get a chance to know Nick personally until the mid 90s when I approached him after watching him cut up two copies of 7 Minutes of Funk like butter dripping from his finger tips. We've been cool as hell ever since. There used to be a lot more tapes by Nick floating around, and I remember listening to them in car rides to parties with friends etc, but this is the only one I have in my possession, and it's a killer. A perfect blend of samples, with little sections like DJ Premier sections, Pete Rock sections, Tribe Called Quest etc. Most deeper heads I know in the game have come across Nick somehow, and it's always positive things. He's been around for a long time save for the occasional hiatus, and he is now out and about working with Red Bull and playing parties as Deejay Freqnik.

Thanks for pulling out the few tapes you have left, and this is especially dope since this is the music I remember you playing!
